<<Special Information for the Philippines - #2>>

(Sorry… I was out of town so there were no updates during the day…)

MEKKHALA (AmangPH/T1501/01W) intensified into a Typhoon for a short period of time before making landfall on Samar Island, Philippines… Organization of MEKKHALA is worsening now… Apparently the storm has started to weaken… The current intensity is estimated to be about 90 km/h (50 kts)… i.e. a minimal Severe Tropical Storm…

Strongest winds are observed in the northern semicircle of MEKKHALA where pressure gradients are steep…

The cyclone will go on losing strength due to increasing wind shear and land interactions… It should become a Tropical Depression over or near Central Luzon on Monday… It should dissipate by Tuesday…

MEKKHALA should move northwest along the edge of the steering ridge… Landfall on Bicol Region is expected in the early morning of Sunday…  It should then move over Calabarzon and Central Luzon…

Friends in central and northern Philippines… especially Eastern Visayas / Bicol Region / Calabarzon / Central Luzon / NCR should pay attention to the movement of MEKKHALA… Strong gusts and heavy showers may affect you… Note that the strongest winds should stay north of the storm centre…

Catarman reported sea level pressure of 995.4 hPa at 10 p.m. local time…

Please always check also the latest cyclone updates from PAGASA…
